ORCA Video Examples of Reading to Locate Information on the Internet

Reading to Locate tasks (4 items)
require students to locate the relevant email message (in an inbox) or wiki section, use appropriate keywords in a search engine, efficiently read search results, and identify websites with information that can be used to solve the information problem scenario.

 

CCSS:

  • Reading Informational Texts 6-12
    • RI 7.8 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas. Trace & evaluate argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether reasoning is sound and evidence is relevant nd sufficient to support the claims.
    • RI 7.10 Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity. By the end of the year, read and comprehend non-fiction in grades 6-8 text complexity band, with scaffolding needed at the high end of the range.
  • Reading Science and Technical Subjects
    • RSTS 7.3 Key Ideas and Details: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks.
  • Writing/Writing in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects
    • W 7.7 Research To Build and Present Knowledge: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate.
    • WHST 7.7 Research To Build and Present Knowledge: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
    • WHST 7.8 Research To Build and Present Knowledge: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively, assess credibility and accuracy of each source, and quote or paraphrase data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.
